Alessandro Profumo is one of the most authoritative European managers in the banking, financial and industrial sectors.
Following early experience in strategic consulting at McKinsey and Bain, together with other roles in the banking and insurance sectors, he joined Credito Italiano in 1994, which later became UniCredit.
Appointed Chief Executive Officer in 1997, he led one of the most significant transformations in European banking, guiding UniCredit’s growth from a national bank into a pan-European leader. Under his leadership, between 1997 and 2010, UniCredit grew from approximately 15,000 to over 162,000 employees, extending its presence to 23 countries.
He subsequently held numerous senior positions in leading Italian financial and industrial institutions, including the Chairmanship of Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, from 2012 to 2015, and a seat on the Board of Directors of ENI. During the same period, in February 2012, he was appointed by the European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services as a member of the High Level Expert Group, the group of experts tasked in Brussels with developing proposals to reform the structure of the European banking sector.
His institutional profile has been further strengthened over time through some of the most prominent international representative roles, including President of the International Monetary Conference (IMC) from 2006 to 2012, President of the European Banking Federation (EBF) from 2009 to 2011 and, more recently, President of ASD – Aerospace and Defence Industries Association of Europe from 2020 to 2023.
In 2017 he was appointed by the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance to lead Leonardo and was subsequently appointed Chief Executive Officer by the company’s Board of Directors, a role he held until 2023. Leonardo is one of the world’s leading international groups in the aerospace, defence and security sectors.
Throughout his career he has received significant institutional honours, including the title of Cavaliere del Lavoro and the honour of Grande Ufficiale dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana (Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic).
